The cryptocurrency world has seen an enormous number of scams and hacks, leading to considerable financial losses due to smart contract exploits, hacks, and various forms of fraud (Crypto Crime Reports by Chainalysis). As cybersecurity professionals actively monitoring the security trends in the Web3 space, we have been inspired to develop the first Web3 DNS security-focused solution. Our vision is to create a robust defense system, ensuring the protection of users against potential threats in this ever-evolving landscape.

The ProtonDNS project will offer two main services:

1. 🔒 ProtonDNS functions as a set of DNS servers, ensuring uninterrupted access, fast responses, and secure queries on all devices.

2. 🔎 ProtonDNS will offer an advanced domain intelligence specifically designed for Web3, allowing users to scan any provided domain and identify potential suspicious activities. (Watch demo video)

ProtonDNS Service and Features

1. The ProtonDNS service will act as your shield against known threats by preventing access to malicious domains and attacks on your infrastructure. Notably, ProtonDNS is a software-free solution, meaning you won't need to install any third-party software on your device. It's a hassle-free way to stay protected and secure in the digital world.

Additionally, the ProtonDNS service offers the following features:

• Report Fraudulent Domains: Users can report fraudulent domains through a smart contract on the Proton blockchain. By doing so, they will be rewarded in $XPR for contributing to a safer online environment.

• Web3 Vanity Address for Self-Hosted Domains: For those who self-host their domains, ProtonDNS allows them to add a Web3 vanity address to our DNS. This enables easy access to their domains via a browser, using the format alvosec.xpr.

2. The ProtonDNS security scanner is an advanced domain intelligence solution, specially designed for Web3 users. With this application, users will be able to easily check and analyze any domain to identify potential threats such as malicious, phishing or drainer domains.

We have integrated more than 50 features into the scanner, including verification of domain, DNS Blacklists, VirusTotal checks, phishing list detection, identification of malicious files, Google Safe Browsing, Google Search Results, and many others.

We applied on URLhaus to measure our DNS performance by counting blacklisted domain names and comparing them to Cloudflare, Quad9, AdGuard, etc.

Roadmap

• Conduct extensive analysis of a vast number of domains to uncover common patterns associated with malicious domains. Utilizing these findings, we will build a model capable of detecting potential phishing domains based on these identified patterns.

• Strengthen our capabilities by integrating additional threat intelligence services from providers like Mnemonic, CRDF labs, alphaMountain, and Bfore.

• Continuously develop and introduce new features to further enhance the functionality of ProtonDNS.

• Create informative instructional videos, educating users on how to effectively utilize ProtonDNS and its features.

• Launch marketing campaigns aimed at increasing awareness of ProtonDNS and expanding our user base.

• Establish strategic partnerships with leading companies and services that offer security solutions within the Web3 space.

Project Cost Breakdown

• 35% of total grant will be dedicated for further development.

• 40% of total grant will cover the funding hardware cost such as servers.

• 10% of the grant will be allocated to cover the expenses of additional services required for the project, such as APIs, certificates.

• 15% of total grant will be dedicated to funding marketing advertisements and creating instructional videos.

We are applying for a total grant amount of $15,000.
